The Notion Collective proposes to cover a public space with a suspended array of individual networked umbrellas which, responding to current weather predictions and local precipitation conditions, open to create a radiant, colorful canopy when it rains. Untitled (Umbrella Project) aims to take the ordinary experience of rain and transform it into something to be observed, locally shared, and communally enjoyed. While its form mimics the masses of umbrella-wielding urban pedestrians, in its function this sculpture would convert the emotional context of those umbrellas from an uncomfortable personal space to a delightful public one.
This project was originally conceived as a site-specific installation for the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM).
